Petrex Cup Road Race 2013 Celebrations

Petrex Cup As part of the annual celebrations of Petrex on Thursday 11th July a local Cycle Event was sponsored.

The Petrex Cup Road Race was organised to include the Aberdeen District Road Race Championships. The race started at Midmar with two laps of Echt, Garlogie, Carnie, Mason Lodge, Dunect and then back to Midmar. The top local riders were joined by a good contingent from Moray and the Central Belt; in total 46 riders took the start at 6:30pm. Within 5 miles of the start a very select bunch of 12 riders broke free and built up a 1.5 minute lead over the bunch at the end of Lap 1. Petrex’s own Tim Mackley led the elite group through the line to start Lap 2. This elite group maintained the gap for the second lap, despite efforts from the chasers.

As the leaders approached the final short climb, Brian Widdison of MFCC broke clear and surged ahead towards the line, Simon Van Bellen of Aberdeen Wheelers was the next to react and squeezed out every last ounce of strength to overhaul Widdison meters before the line to finish a short distance ahead. The remains of the lead group came in seconds later, with the rest of the field a few minutes later.

With his win Van Bellen also took the Aberdeen District Championships, with Ali Watt and Veli Raikkonen taking 2nd and 3rd for GCRT. The inaugural Petrex Cup, awarded to the local team with the best placed 3 riders went to Simon Van Bellen, Lee Smith and Jono Hunter of Aberdeen Wheelers. The event organised by Aberdeen Wheelers was well supported by local clubs Deeside Thistle and Ythan CC. Petrex are proud to sponsor cycling in Aberdeen and to be associated with Aberdeen Wheelers Cycling Club. Support continues with the handover of new race numbers to AWCC for use in future events.
